Abstract [eng] R. Mazeikaite. The impact of educational programs to the knowledge of nurses about the nutrition support in patients with acute pancreatitis. Nursing Master Studies Program’s Paper. Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Vida Mockiene, Klaipeda University: Klaipeda, 2012. – 64 p. Relevance of theme: The early application of enteral and parenteral nutrition plays an important role in patients with acute pancreatitis in order to prevent complications and restore normal body functions. It is important that nurses admit and respond to the new needs, arising from the health care system that is constantly changing and becoming more complex. Training should be targeted in new directions, improving continuing studies of nursing education in Lithuania and improving the care of patients with acute pancreatitis. Goal. To assess the impact of an educational program to the knowledge of nurses about artificial nutrition of patients with acute pancreatitis. Methods. An experimental study (pre-interventional and post-interventional) with two groups of respondents (n = 87): the experimental group (EG, n = 43) and the control group (CG, n = 44). Data were collected using the questionnaire of E. Siow, 2008. Results. The results showed that after the intervention the knowledge of nurses significantly increased in the EG. Particularly, the knowledge about: the causes of formation of negative nitrogen balance in more difficult forms of acute pancreatitis (27,9 percent.), the level of C-reactive protein in acute pancreatitis (41,8 percent.), there were significantly more (72,1 percent) nurses who knew the difference between enteral and parenteral feeding; also, who knew that enteral nutrition is the primary path of nutrition (significantly more nurses (27,9 percent)) for patients with acute pancreatitis. After the intervention a significant difference between the respondents of two groups were identified – the knowledge of respondents of EG significantly improved. It was determined that the nurses’ work experience in health care system, including the section, before the intervention had a significant (p<0,05) effect on their knowledge about the impact of complications of the artificial nutrition occurring in patients with acute pancreatitis, and the education had a significant (p<0,05) effect on nurses’ knowledge about the application of artificial nutrition of patients with acute pancreatitis, (R0,22) – nurses with higher education knew the difference better than nurses with lower education. Education and work experience before the intervention had no significant (p<0.05) effect on the knowledge of the nursing activities for patients with acute pancreatitis in neither of the group but the work experience had an impact on choosing the right answers about the clinic. Conclusions. Specially prepared and implemented training program about the artificial nutrition of patients with acute pancreatitis has improved the knowledge of nurses. The hypothesis was confirmed.
