Abstract [eng] In today’s world, more and more importance is placed on personal career and its management. Career planning is a lifelong process. A person can easily get lost in the context of global change, therefore, in order to avoid this and to have a successful career plan educational institutions pursue an objective to develop personal management competence. Consequently, universities need to contribute to the development of students’ personal career management. Research question – what skills that guarantee personal career management competencies can be developed at university and how? Subject of research – the development of personal career management competence of a student. Research aim is to analyse on both theoretical and empirical aspects the development of personal career management competencies of students’ at Klaipėda University. By means of theoretical analysis, interviews and their analyses, survey method and statistical data analysis for processing the results, some theoretical assumptions regarding the development of personal career management competencies at universities have been analysed in detail in this final thesis. In addition to this, the attitudes of career specialists, lecturers as well as students towards the development of personal career competence at the university have been revealed. All this helped to approach the research question comprehensively. There is a hypothesis put forward in the thesis predicting that a university could offer successful development of personal career management competence if lecturers and career professionals helped the students to develop self-cognition skills, also abilities to search career opportunities and make career decisions in the study process (teaching, consulting and gaining personal experience). This hypothesis has been confirmed. Self-cognition skills as well as abilities to search career opportunities and make career decisions during university studies that guarantee personal career management competence can be developed through teaching, consulting and gaining personal experience. All the university members participating in the study process are considered to be responsible for the development and growth of personal career competence. Taking the empirical data into consideration, it is possible to draw a conclusion that Klaipėda University lecturers, career specialists as well as students themselves make a contribution to the development of the aforementioned competence. The research shows that the students at Klaipėda University have achieved this competence only partly and with the help of their lecturers during lectures and also independently through their personal experience. Only a small amount of students have acquired personal career management competence with the help of career specialists. Few students call upon them for advice due to the lack of information on their services provided and because the students feel no need for such services.
