Abstract [eng] The article examines an important aspect of Lithuanian history in the period after World War I. The relations between the Lithuanians and the local Polish population, whose confidence in the superiority of the 'gentry' nation' over the 'peasant nation' bordered on the eccentric, were strained. The distrust of 'aliens' from both sides developed anti-Polish and anti-Lithuanian stereotypes and conflicts during the first years of Independence. The Lithuanian Riflemen Association was a paramilitary organization formed during the struggle for independence and intended to safeguard the freedom of the new Lithuanian Republic. Aspects of the Polish-Lithuanian conflict over the Vilnius Region, the ideological basis of the Association and its position with regard to the Poles, the riflemen/partisans' activities on the Lithuanian border with Poland in 1920-1923 are analyzed in this article which draws on unpublished materials from the Lithuanian State Archive.
