| Abstract [eng] |
The distinction between obligatory and optional punctuation rules makes us discuss the basis for such distinction as well as more general issues concerned with the principles of distinction. Principles given in the literature on applied linguistics focus on two major language functions: representation and communication. The function of communication prevails; therefore, it should play the decisive role in applying principles and setting the rules. At present some rules focus on the sentence structure and the function of representation, other rules aim at meeting the needs of the writer. Sometimes formal features make up the sole basis of the rule. When no leading principle is selected, the set of rules does not look very consistent. The innovations of reviewed rules make it easier to apply them, especially when they are concerned with punctuation exercising more freedom and clearly aim at communicative purposes. |
