Abstract [eng] The article points out that nowadays the oldest European institutions - the Church and university - retain a very important mission to create the civilization and culture of the new Europe on the basis of Christian values. The Catholic Church is not only an active assistant in the creation of the new Europe, but it is the essential unifying power which lays the foundation for the political, social and economical unity of the cultures which are joining Europe. The essence of pastoral care of the university is the search for a dialogue between faith and science, between religion and culture. This involves presence of the Church and its members in academic processes in search for the truth about the world, man and God. All great European universities were founded and operated on the basis of Christian morality. Pastoral care was not uncongenial to medieval academic society as monasteries, clergymen and popes, who were concerned with both science and spiritual development, took part in establishment of European universities. Therefore, the Church today urges to stop, look back and consider if a modern person can create a better future for the society without essential principles of morality.
