Abstract [eng] Academic year of 2009–2010 witnessed the 20th anniversary of free religion teaching in schools. Only those persons who are sent by the bishop – religion teachers – can teach religion in schools. This article discusses what kind of people can be authorised to teach religion, i.e. the nominee has to be faithful and witnessing the faith by his/her life; introduces professional subject matter qualifications of a religion teacher; presents links between religion teacher’s identity in the society and the canonical authorisation (missio canonica). Close links between the religion teacher’s identity and bestowal of missio canonica indicate that a person without essential qualities of a religion teacher cannot be granted missio canonica and a person who loses the qualities characteristic to a religion teacher also loses the missio canonica.
