2009 is the one thousandth anniversary of the name of Lithuania being mentioned in written sources, which is closely connected to proclamation of Christianity and christening of pagans. The Church seeks the christened to be properly prepared, acquainted with the religious truths and understanding the meaning of the sacrament. This article reveals the symbolism of baptismal water while discussing the universal symbolism of water. There is also a special emphasis on the perception of water in Baltic and Eastern environment, presentation of the symbolism of water in the Old Testament as a primary image of baptismal water, revelation of the sacralisation of water in Christianity and the theology of baptismal water. |
