Abstract [eng] Nurse turnover is a recurring problem in healthcare settings that can affect patient safety, increase healthcare costs, and influence staff morale and job satisfaction, as they make up the largest professional group in healthcare and have direct contact with patients. The shortage of health workers is common worldwide, but it is particularly important in those areas where health indicators are lowest. Nor is the situation aggravated by an aging population, an increasing number of people suffering from chronic diseases, and an aging nursing staff. Human resource and workforce planning is a global priority. As health care financing in Lithuania is lower than in other developed countries, inadequate budget distribution and performance, as well as increased workload and shrinking workforce, the emigration of nurses and an aging population - both for medical and patient care - are of especially important.
