Effective communication influences the quality of patient care, patient safety, and is important for quality care. Failure of communication increases the likelihood of medical errors and deaths of patients associated with them. Stress in the work environment reduces the productivity of anesthesia and intensive care nurses, negatively affects psychological well-being, reducing work efficiency, job satisfaction, and quality of services provided. Stressful situations reduce the ability to communicate effectively. The objective of the study – correlation between communication skills and work-related stress of anesthesia and intensive care nurses. Methods of study. A quantitative research was made by using the questionnaires - the Interpersonal Communication Skills Inventory, the General Symptom Distress Scale (GSDS) and the Questionnaire of the cope with stress. For the purposes of the research, 127 anesthesia and intensive care nurses have been interviewed. The methods of statistical data processing and content analysis were used. The study was contucted with respect to ethical principles. Study results. Anesthetic and intensive care nurses were found to lack communication skills, but the level of distress felt by nurses was not high (3 out of 10). The strongest communication skills are speaking, the weakest are giving and receiving feedback. The most common symptoms of distress are fatigue, sleep problems and headaches. Nurses were more likely to use problem solving and social support to reduce stress than emotional discharge and avoidance. Nurses with stronger listening and giving and receiving feedback abilities used social support significantly to cope with stress. Those with higher levels of emotional interaction management, callback, receiving and speaking skills used emotional discharge significantly less frequently to cope with stress. Nurses that are more likely to cope with stress with emocional discharge, feel a greater intensity of these symptoms of distress: depression, attention / memory impairment, constipation, sleep disturbance, headache, anxiety, swelling of the hands / feet. Emotional discharge is used to overcome stress when it is impossible to deal with it. Findings. The results of the study showed that anesthesia and intensive care nurses with stronger communication skills are only partially better at managing stress. |
