Abstract [eng] This article attempts to reveal the realization of missionary educational Franciscan mission in Kretinga in 1918–1940. In the context of this article, the activity of Catholic educational institution is presented as a sociocultural phenomenon, bringing in a significant input to the region’s cultural development of the thirties of the 20th century. The establishment of St. Anthony’s College–Gymnasium in 1932 not only promoted the development of Catholic education, but also allowed the renewal of the Franciscan monastery. The most important aims of St. Anthony’s College activity were missionary training and religious education of young people. Having a new building and a significant society support, in the middle of thirties of the 20th century the college became an augmentative Gymnasium acting as a significant region’s religious, educational and sociocultural institution. The vast majority of students were Catholics, but students of different religious confessions were accepted, too. By courtesy of monastery, different Catholic funds and private sponsors, many poor young people, who later became monks missionaries or active public educators, could prepare for the mission. In the latest years of the Gymnasium existence girls were allowed to study, too. Gymnasium teachers had to meet very high requirements, most of them had higher education, and many of them had completed theological studies.
