Object of the work – Lithuanian academic library employee‘s qualaifiction development assumptions and possibilities. The goal of the work – to diclose the employees‘ professional qualification development system optimization assumptions and possibilities. By utilising scientific literature analysis methods to review papers and other scientific publications from Lithuanian and foreign authors in order to determine the fine details of professional development: general qualification development features are under review alongside with the specifics of professional development for public sector workers Due to constant changes in the academic environment, library workers are being assigned new roles which is linked with the need for new professional competencies. To research the process of professional development in Lithuanian state academic libraries an empiric study was conducted which consisted of 2 parts: in the first part an academic library worker survey was conducted, and in the second part a qualitative study – interviews with academic library directors. The goal of the study was to determine how do the academic library workers view the professional development process and their opinion on what could be done to improve it. According to the results of the study many of the respondents view their professional development opportunities positively although professional development in Lithuanian academic libraries is a fragmentary process, there are no responsible institutions and no clear, formal system which is agreed upon on a national level.
