Abstract [eng] |
After discussing the differences between love as agape and love as fileos, the article analyses the changes of love in Jesus’ three questions to Peter and Peter’s responses (John 21:15-17). Terminological and linguistic analysis as well as analysis and synthesis of theological literature reveal that evangelist John uses different words (agapao, fileo) to refer to love in his Greek writings. In Lithuanian language these two words have only one equivalent and, therefore, the textual reflection of the changes in the meaning of love is lost in translation. Jesus’ three questions to Peter encompass the meaningful change of love. Jesus asks about agape love, but Peter responds with fileos love. Peter does not dare to admit agape love to Jesus because he lacks this self-devoting type of love – agape – although Jesus calls upon each person to love all people by this love. |
