Practical manifestation of the concept of cultural memory in the Duchy of Žemaitija in the II half of the 16th century and its correlation with the context of confessionalization processes are analyzed in the paper. The author verifies a well-established approach in historiography about the Bishop of Žemaitija as the person who baptized Žemaitija for the second time. This discussion the above mentioned context is solely based on the material of Žemaitija diocese visits in 1579. It has been identified that the following values of the Christian life came into practice in the Catholic parish communities of Vilkija, Veliuona, Skirsnemunė, Ariogala and Kražiai: to have own churches, to handle their paraphernalia and satisfy at least minimal needs for pastoral care; in about 1579 support of the quality of these values is not strictly linked with the presence of an active priest; the process of institutionalization of these values in the above mentioned parishes leads to the essential component of the confessionalization process – the content of self-regulation, however, success of putting it into practice to a large extent depended on conducive relations with the local priest. |
