Abstract [eng] The article analyses the Lithuanian church choirs in the USA as preservers of spirituality and nationality. Many emigrants were members of parish choirs because to many people it seemed that to be a Lithuanian means to be a Catholic. The concert life was the most intensive during the period between the World Wars. In the beginning of the 20th century Lithuanians started to hold concerts of united church choirs. These were the beginnings of the national song festivals. The aim of this article is to point the reasons which stimulated or hampered the activity of church choirs in the religion and secular music spheres.
