The article focuses on the social structure of gender identity, exploring sociological concepts used to define gender identity performance on different structural levels. The critic of gender as a social role leads to the use of more appropriate concept, where gender is defined as a set of social practices. Different levels of gender practicing are displayed by dissimilar categories of sex and gender. This theoretical assumption is applied in the analysis of the autobiographies of Lithuanians in XX century. The autobiographical material exposes social principles of gender representations, how social structure and gender regimes organised individual practices as a ground for the construction of gender identity. |
