Abstract [eng] Diabetes mellitus is a widely spread chronic disease and one of the most pressing public health issues. Physical and psychosomatic effect of diabetes mellitus predetermines permanently increasing burden of health care all over the world. In order to improve life quality related to health of persons ill with diabetes mellitus, it is important to understand the symptoms characteristic to diabetes. People of various age and any race, also any ethnic, social and economic background suffer from depression; however, depression in those being ill with diabetes mellitus is expressed two or three times more often. Aim of the research. To analyze life quality and expressiveness of depression symptoms related to health of patients ill with diabetes mellitus. Methodology of the research. Quantitative studies, written questionnaire survey conducted. The research instrument consisted of SF36 and PHQ-9 questionnaires. Statistical program packet „SPSS 23.0.0 for Windows” was used for the data analysis. The sample was drawn from 132 patients being ill with diabetes mellitus. The research was conducted when following the principles of ethics and referring to the Declaration of Helsinki. Results of the research. Statistically significant differences in all parameters were established, namely that women estimated their health to be much worse than the health of men. With age, life quality related to physical health gets worse.. While estimating spread of depression among the patients being ill with diabetes mellitus, depression symptoms were established among two thirds of the patients. Spread of depression statistically significantly was much larger among women than men. Expressiveness of symptoms of a more complicated depression is statistically significantly related to the older age. Depression symptoms make everyday activities more difficult to more than a half of all the respondents. Larger expressiveness of depression symptoms is related to a worse life quality and mostly to decreased physical activity. Conclusion. Life quality related to health of those being ill with diabetes mellitus is affected by the following factors: feminine gender, longer length of incidence with diabetes and senior age. Depression symptoms are observed in as many as two thirds of all the respondents. Expressiveness of depression symptoms affect a poorer life quality related to health of the patients being ill with diabetes mellitus. For the largest part, depression symptoms were expressed due to decreased physical activity.
