Abstract [eng] The Master’s Paper analyses the status of Lithuanian freedom fighters-partisans in accordance with international law. The author seeks to present a comprehensive assessment of international law of armed conflict, norms of customary law and experience of states and establish legal status of partisans. The research consists of two parts. The first one explains the norms of international law of armed conflict regulating the legal status of combatants and partisans; tackles the problem of partisan status, experienced by the states in WWII and post-war period; analyses the decisions of international military tribunals and norms of customary law applicable to this issue; and defines the law applicable to the partisan war period in Lithuania. The second part examines the status issue of freedom fighters of Lithuania. Great attention is paid to the development analysis of armed resistance, description of resistance organizations and freedom fighters, and their correspondence with the requirements of international law for legal combatants. The paper is closed by conclusions on the correspondence of Lithuanian freedom fighters with combatant status established by international law.
