Abstract [eng] |
Theodoros Kameris’s master’s thesis examines Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (the “Resurrection” Symphony) as a point of synthesis between Wagnerian and Schubertian traditions. The study focuses on how influences from Wagner’s Parsifal and Schubert’s Ninth Symphony inform Mahler’s symphonic language, analyzing both the work’s philosophical and aesthetic narrative—the path from subjective “wandering” to metaphysical “resurrection”—and its technical structure, including instrumentation, intervallic and harmonic design. Through comparative score analysis and literature review, Kameris identifies intertextual references, such as Schubertian melodic or harmonic gestures and Wagnerian mythic or dramatic ideas (notably symbols of death and redemption), that shape the design and meaning of the Resurrection Symphony. The thesis situates Mahler’s Second Symphony as a convergence point in the Austro-German symphonic lineage, tracing formal parallels and symbolic content that bridge Schubert’s lyricism with Wagner’s grand musical dramaturgy. |
