Abstract [eng] |
This paper examines the concept and significance of the public library as a contemporary public space in a changing society. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Jürgen Habermas, Jane Jacobs, Kevin Lynch, and Setha Low, the study seeks to highlight the importance and relevance of public space in today’s context. It explores how technological transformations are reshaping the functions of libraries, particularly in small communities, where libraries increasingly evolve into multifunctional public spaces. By comparing international and Lithuanian examples of library architecture and conducting empirical research, the study assesses the condition and functionality of libraries in Lithuania. A more detailed case study of the Jurgis Kunčinas Library in Alytus is presented to substantiate the need for a new building to better serve the local community. |
