Abstract [eng] Vocal jazz improvisation in Lithuania has not been dissertated thoroughly. The objective of this thesis – the elements that differ vocal improvisation from instrumental improvisation, i. e. verbal and nonverbal vocal jazz improvisation methods. While researching such tasks were done: 1) scientific and pedagogic literature about vocal jazz improvisation, its origin and its characteristics was analysed; 2) specific vocal jazz improvisation methods were discussed; 3) while comparing lithuanian language syllable structure to vocal jazz improvisation in textbooks and scat syllable examples, certain consistencies were determined; 4) the ideas that arose were checked by executing a lithuanian jazz singer survey online. The structure of this thesis. This thesis contains a preface, three chapters, conclusions, references and appendices. The first chapter overlooks the origins of vocal jazz improvisation, the influence of bebop and vocal improvisation features that are pointed out in literature. The second chapter analyses verbal improvisation (from repeats of the text from the head to the creation of a new text). Vocalise is also discussed. Third chapter analyses nonverbal vocal jazz improvisation – improvising with the use of meaningless syllables and immitating instruments. The method of scat replacing words grabs the biggest attention. The structure of meaningless scat syllables is compared with lithuanian language syllables, their phonemic analysis is performed, consonant usage regularities are determined, scat dictionary expansion methods are pointed out, timbral use of vowels and scat syllable pronunciation properties are discussed. Instrumental immitation methods are analysed: scat syllables, nonsyllabic sounds, the system of Konnakol and realistic instrument immitation. At the end of the thesis overall conclusions of the research are given, references and appendices are submitted. Appendices contain english and lithuanian language vowel, dipthong and consonant systems, traditional scat syllable consonant system (chart) in accordance to Weir and Stoloff textbook and recordings is created, hich can be used by singers that want to systematically expand their scat syllable dictionary, and lithuanian jazz singer survey results are given.
