Abstract [eng] The main purpose of the documentary film is to show reality and to reveal the truth. From the very beginning of documentary film scientists and practitioners are investigating the reality of documentary film. Whether a documentary presents the objective reality, or does it contain artistic meanings? R. Dubinskaitė argues that the boundaries between visual and documentary film become less complete. There are a lot of topics on the subject, but it is devoted to the general theory of documentary film, history of development. Documentary films are also explored by scholars in other fields, such as: art studies, gender studies, philosophy, semiotics, history, communication, journalism, but they are not responsible for all the questions raised in the context of the topic under discussion. The novelty of the theme is determined by the fact that the work analyzes the opinion of viewers about the reality in documentary film the aim is to find out what determines their perception of reality. The object of the study of master's work is the concept of reality in documentary film. The aim of the work is to determine whether the reality in a documentary is the objective form of reality, or the subjective attitude of the developer, as well as revealing what influences the perception of reality in documentary film. It was found that documentary film is a kind of cinematic art, the material of which is real events. These events can be understood as objective reality or as a subjective perception of the cinema creator of certain facts. The image itself is objective, but after recording it becomes a subjective view of the creator and an illusion of reality. The results of the research also revealed that the viewer perceives reality through “image” and “narrative”. These ways of presenting information are most welcome to the viewer. The reality of the viewer's perception is also influenced by realism, informativeness and visibility. “Images”, “appearances” and “story” are more important than “video technical features”, “director's decisions” or “proper music”. According to viewers, visuality and aesthetic view helps to make realistically portray of the image, but it does not affect the viewer's perception of reality.
