Abstract [eng] Based on the similarities between music and language and their common characteristics, we can say that music can be narrative, even if not related to verbal, sign or visual language. In more modern theories narrative is comprehended as substantial when organising structure of any message. It can be expressed not only through written text or spoken signs but through music and other nonverbal language. This work analyses the issues of narrative in contemporary music. It discusses the principles and structures, which allows for a narrative to exist in musical piece. It discusses the significance of performer and listener in the development of the contemporary music narrative. Study object: musical story telling particularities (the tools and ways of composing musical narrative) in the music for violin solo. The reason why this study object was chosen, is the contemporary music performance in the context of narrative, as well as personal interest and creative practices. The first chapter contains the concise analysis of the term and the concept of the word ‘narrative’ and its expressions in music. In the second chapter, structural elements of narrative in music written for violin is analysed. Separate subsections are dedicated to review performer’s and listener’s contribution to the reveal of the narrative in the piece. A musical example, that reveals literary and musical narrative similarities and differences, is introduced and analysed. Appendices contain empirical study. Eight active participants of contemporary music world were interviewed. The conclusion summarises the key propositions from the conducted research.
