Presently, spent nuclear fuel (SNF) is stored in water pools at the Ignalina NPP. SNF is gradually removed from the pools and placed into dry type storage casks. The storage casks are not suitable for the disposal of SNF into deep geological repositories; therefore, it is planned that SNF after the storage period of 50-100 years will be reloaded into special disposal canisters. The evaluation of nuclear and radiation characteristics of a conceptual steel disposal canister which is loaded with the RBMK-1500 SNF is presented in the paper. The obtained characteristics are compared with analogous characteristics previously analyzed for a conceptual copper disposal canister. |
