Abstract [eng] There are 165 maritime education and training (MET) institutions in European Union (EU) countries, among them 96 have basic programs leading to deck and engineering officer watchkeeping certificate. MET institutions vary in types of management, institutional structures and administration. There are different schemes and programs of MET, but the qualification of the seafarers educated and trained in different countries should meet the minimum requirements stated in international legal acts. MET in Lithuania has it’s own traditions, it should be harmonized with EU MET and meet the goals and priorities of EU policy. The aim of this article is to evaluate Lithuanian MET system ant it’s potential as a part of European MET.
