This paper analyzes the problem of small states in European Union. Paper discusses the characteristics of small states, highlighting their weaknesses in confrontation with the large EU member states. Regionalism (micro and macro levels) is presented as a potential option to regulate and to some extent compensate disparities in the impact and opportunities to act for small and large EU member states. It also takes into account the contradictory effects of regionalism. Finally, analyzis moves to the experiences of regionalism in Central and Eastern Europe, and discusses optimization process of the Lithuanian territorial units. |
