The aim of this thesis is to analyse several texts of Lithuanian travel literature depicting the USA (America) and written during the Soviet era. The first part of the thesis introduces a general literary context of the epoch discussed, reveals the peculiarities of the Soviet rhetoric, the relationship of the writer and the ideology, censorship and the ways of avoiding it, and characteristics of the socialist realism. The second part of the thesis presents the main aspects of the narratology (G. Genette), explains the key theoretic concepts, which later are used in the analysis of the travel writings. The third part is dedicated to the analysis of texts, written by S. Šimkus, G. Zimanas, A. Laurinčiukas, J. Lukoševičius, and J. Baltušis: analyzes the visual formation of the USA, discusses characteristics of the ideological layer of the texts, features of narrators and their narratives, and the speakers‘ relation to the place described. |
