Recently there has been more and more discussion and research in the general population and scientific realms about the burnout syndrome. Burnout is a serious problem affecting members of many professions, however, there has been more attention towards pedagogues experiencing burnout. Purpose of this research, based on the need for research and relevance of the topic, was to reveal relationships among burnout, personality traits and sociodemographic measures of pedagogues. 160 pedagogues working in educational institutions in Klaipėda city and region participated in this research. Their mean age = 44,4 years. In order to study relationship among burnout, personality traits and sociodemographic measures a joint research instrument was created. Burnout syndrome: Maslach burnout questionnaire dedicated for burnout of pedagogues (MBI- Educators Survey- MBI-ES) comprising of 22 statements was used. In order to research personality traits “Five Main” (John, Donahue & Kentle, 1991) abbreviated trait questionnaire comprising of 44 statements was used. And to research sociodemographic measures an author-comprised sociodemographic questionnaire was used. Research results revealed that pedagogues of this sample experience components of burnout. It was identified that among pedagogues of this sample traits of agreeableness, openness to experience and conscientiousness. More common burnout is characteristic to pedagogues who are less introverted, conscientious and prone to agreeableness. It was found that more common emotional burnout occurs among those pedagogues who are raising less children. The study revealed that there is no significant difference (p>0,05) between different age groups and burnout components. Independently of age all pedagogues of this sample show similar frequency for burnout characteristics. Regression analysis of collected data revealed only a partially appropriate prognostic relationship among variables: more expressive trait of neuroticism allows predicting only 11% more frequent emotional burnout, and work experience does not have an effect on burnout. |
