Reading is one of the most important abilities to acquire in primary school that has considerable significance in later academic success. It is connected with reading proficiency and motivation. The aim of this study was to reveal correlations between primary school students’ motivation to read and their skills. Primary school students’ incentive to read was examined by applying The Motivation to Read Profile – revised version by J. A. Malloy, A. Marinak, L. B. Gambrell, S. A. Mazzoni, 2013. Reading skills were evaluated using the task of making Wordchains. Reading comprehension was assessed using Text Apprehension Exercises. The results of the study show that students from different schools understand benefits of reading similarly to one another and that they believe in their ability to read. After evaluating their reading capabilities, the skills appear to be similar as well. It is shown in the study, that fourth graders value reading the most, also, their reading skills are the best. There are noticeable differences between genders in regard to students’ motivation and reading skills. Girls display a greater incentive and their reading skills are better than boys’. Lastly, the study reveals that the higher the reading motivation, the better the reading skills. |
