By the method of comparative analysis the article approaches the state of free press in Lithuania and its influence on the formation of a civic society in various historic periods of the country. There is a short survey of illegal circulation of Lithuanian publications in Lithuania occupied by Russia during the run of the press ban (1864–1904), the strict censorship of periodicals by the tsarist authorities after abrogation of the Lithuanian press ban, securities of press freedom in the constitutions and the Press laws of interwar Lithuania, the genuine free speech and press in the reconstituted independent Lithuanian state. |
