Abstract [eng] The article deals with the territorial differences of birth rate change within the period of 1990-2001 in Lithuania and the factors that determined it. Different reasons that influenced the geographically uneven change of birth rate in the country are being analysed in the socio-economic environment. A great deal of attention is paid to the analysis of the relation between the decrease in birth rate and the inhabitants’ average occupation level and different revenues; apart from that, the article also devotes its attention to the analysis of the relation of birth rate to the change in women of reproductive age attempting to reveal the main motives for reproductive behaviour and factors directly influencing birth rate processes and their territorial differences in the country. The conclusions presented herein are based on the statistical data and the analysis of the results of the author’s socio-demographic research done in 2003 in Lithuania.
