Abstract [eng] The object of the project – sacredness in piano music, its expression by using various types of musical and non-musical signs; their influence to the performance interpretation. The aim of the research project is to ascertain the ways and tools of sacral expressions in the religious music for the piano, as well as the patterns of use within the works of foreign and Lithuanian composers. Furthermore, in this research an attempt has been made to identify problems the pianists face while performing the religious type of music, with several recommendations made for solutions. The concept of sacred piano music is shown in examples of individual composer’s sacred works and certain instances when sacredness is shown in piano music. With this in mind, four composers and their concepts of sacred music are presented in this work: Olivier Messiaen, Arvo Pärt, Alvidas Remesa and Mykolas Natalevičius. With concrete examples from their works, the aim is to reveal the universality of signs associated with the sacredness, their similarities (and differences) in distinctive style of composers works. Examples of romantic works by F. Liszt, C. Franck are provided to highlight the universality of composing tendencies. Using sign qualifications published by Ch. S. Pierce, all elements used in sacred expression are classified as an icon or a symbol type of sign.
