Abstract [eng] |
The number of people killed on Lithuania's roads has fallen significantly over the last de-cade, but the number of road users seriously and slightly injured remains high. The European U-nion's strategy aims to halve the number of both fatalities and serious injuries by 2030. By signing the Valletta Declaration, Lithuania has committed not only to increase the focus on pedestrian and cycling infrastructure in mobility plans, to improve road user safety by developing safer road inf-rastructure, but also to classify road users who are seriously injured in an accident according to the MAIS3+ injury classification. The study analysed data on road accidents collected by the Lithuanian Institute of Hygiene and the Police, and analysed the severity and distribution of injuries on trunk roads. The data lin-kage between the Institute of Hygiene and the Police duo posed some challenges which affected the results of the 2021 and 2022 study. The study analyses accident rates and legislation, analyses the collected data, identifies their shortcomings, provides recommendations for the development of safer road infrastructure and proposes solutions to allow a more effective assessment of road safety not only in terms of fatalities but also in terms of serious injuries. |
