The role of Delilah from the opera “Samson and Delilah” by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns is one of the most beautiful, mysterious and interesting roles in the operatic literature and the repertoire of every mezzosoprano. Nowadays its relevance and popularity are undeniable in the opera culture. Due to lack of information this opera and role are considered to be rare and hard to perform, also it is not easy to find any relevant information, reviews or articles regarding this topic. In musicological research often the role of Delilah is not analysed. The objective of the master thesis is to examine in as many ways as possible the opera “Samson and Delilah” and the character of Delilah. The object of this work is the role and the character of Delilah. The study also surveys scientific literature, analyses the main influences of the opera and historical period, defines the concepts of Delilah and "la femme fatale", also presents musical analysis of the character. The research consists of two parts. In the first one, three different opera performances are analysed about their concepts of Delilah and the most efficient ways to perform it. In the second part, a very famous Lithuanian mezzosoprano Justina Gringytė and an artistic director of the opera company “Vilnius City Opera” Dalia Ibelhauptaitė are interviewed about their work of “Samson and Delilah”, the preparation of the character, the main features, qualities and concepts of the role. |
