Abstract [eng] When choosing the right tempo for the piece, performers think about many different factors. Usually there are a few things, which are considered: Italian tempo terms, acoustics, performance traditions, the spirit of a particular musical piece. However, not enough attention is given to another tempo indicator – metronome marks, which are sometimes considered as inauthentic or illogical. These clichés are especially popular when discussing pieces written in the first half of XIX century, when metronome was recently invented. Occasionally, performers even don’t know, that such composer as Ludwig van Beethoven already used Maelzel’s metronome, therefore, they think that those markings were written not by composer, but by publisher. In this work it is analyzed if L. van Beethoven’s metronome markings are reliable and if it is needed to follow markings left for ninth symphony. Moreover, some interpretations of conductors were analyzed, in order to reveal different points of view to the performance practice. This problem was already discussed by some major musicologists and performers, mostly from Western Europe and USA, as Clive Brown, Peter Stadlen, Erica Buurman and others, who are thus referred in this work. Some of the opinions considering ninth symphony’s metronome marks differ, therefore variety of attitudes and answers to negotiable questions are presented in the work. This subject is not sufficiently analyzed in Lithuanian language, so this work will be relevant in Lithuania.
