The boundaries of pure genres are gradually disappearing. There are more and more experimental cinematic language tools in documentaries that can also represent reality. This constant disappearance of genre boundaries encourages a review of the concepts of documentary and experimental cinema and an analysis of the interactions between these genres. In response to the challenges faced by creators, this master 's thesis aims to reveal - what elements of experimental cinema in their work and what creative strategies, filmmakers expand the genre of documentary, remain in it and create an understandable, recognizable representation of reality. The research axis of this work is experimental documentary and creative strategies applied in it. The artistic research involves two stages: the analysis of selected experimental documentary films, which are characterized by a subjective narrative, and the artistic practice, during which a short experimental documentary film “Carriers of our memories” was created. The analyzed theoretical concepts of experimental documentary, the performed case analysis and artistic practice show that this genre is often characterized by subjectivity. The creators of experimental documentaries boldly create a subjective (personal) narrative and often rethink the question of the representation of reality in cinema. In addition, the connections between experimental and documentary cinema dictate that deeper layers of truth can exist in cinema, which can only be achieved through fantasy and imagination and various means of stylizing the language of cinema. |
